Labor Day became a U.S. federal holiday in 1894, However, Jewish law has been honoring workers since biblical times. Jewish scholars in ancient Greece even countered Aristotle when he said: “The title of citizen belongs only to those who need not work to live.” Our scholars responded: “Love labor and hate mastery and seek not acquaintance with the ruling power.” We appreciate Jewish labor laws and are thankful for the workers in our community for all they do.
